CHICAGO — A woman was left in critical condition after she was set on fire by a man while traveling aboard the “L” train system in Chicago, police said, adding the suspect remained at large as of Tuesday afternoon.

The incident unfolded on the CTA Blue Line train near Clark and Lake Streets on Monday, around 9:25 p.m., when a 26-year-old woman became involved in an argument with a man that quickly escalated into violence, NBC Chicago reported.

At one point, the suspect, identified only as a man in his 40s, poured a liquid onto the woman and ignited it, causing her to catch fire, police said.

It’s not clear exactly what the man poured onto the victim, whose name has not been released.

The suspect fled from the train at its next stop, police said, and the woman, still on fire, exited before falling to the floor of the platform. She sustained severe burns to most of her body and was transported by the Chicago Fire Department to Storger Hospital, where she is listed in critical condition.

In wake of the incident, the train lines were forced to shut down for hours, NBC Chicago reported, with service resuming around 1:30 a.m. As of Tuesday morning, the trains were once again running on schedule.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing and no suspect was in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.

Few other details have been provided, including what exactly prompted the confrontation between the suspect and victim.
