SAN ANTONIO — A patient who fled from a San Antonio psychiatric hospital as medical officials were trying to load him into an ambulance has been killed when he ran into traffic on a nearby busy highway.

Police spokesman Douglas Greene says the man had a seizure at a treatment center. Then when officials were trying to put him in the ambulance, he bolted toward the highway.

As officers were trying to catch up with him on busy Loop 1604 on San Antonio’s north side, the man made it across the westbound lanes but was hit by several vehicles on the eastbound side.

He wasn’t immediately identified. Green says only that the victim is believed in his 20s.

Homicide and traffic officers are investigating.
