8-year-old falls down shaft into bunker while hiking with family in Hawaii

An 8-year-old boy was critically injured after falling 20 feet into a shaft near the top of the Koko Head Trail in Oahu

OAHU, Hawaii — An 8-year-old boy plunged down a 20-foot shaft connected to a bunker while hiking with his family on Oahu, Hawaii officials reported.

Rescuers received a 911 call about the accident on the Koko Head Trail at 5:24 p.m. Saturday, July 5 , the Honolulu Fire Department said in a news release.

An 8-year-old boy hiking with his parents had fallen down a shaft near the top of the trail, firefighters said.

Rescuers extricated him from the confined space and a helicopter airlifted him to an ambulance waiting at a nearby landing zone established by firefighters, the agency said.

The boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Hawaii News Now reported.
