The trash truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Two passengers were flown by helicopter to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland, for treatment, WUSA9 reported. Their current conditions were not immediately available.

In a post on the Maryland State Police Aviation Command Facebook page, officials said Troopers 1, 2 and 3 and the Shock Trauma GO-TEAM responded to the crash that required an extended extrication. The post said two patients were flown from the scene, and expert providers and more than a dozen units of blood were brought in to support the Howard County Department of Fire Rescue Services and other assisting agencies.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
