In this episode of Inside EMS, co-hosts Chris Cebollero and Kelly Grayson discuss medication errors in emergency medicine, sparked by a news story out of Tennessee in which a nurse is charged with reckless homicide in the 2017 fatal death of a patient to whom she administered a paralytic instead of Versed.
Our co-hosts outline what this could mean for EMS and discuss medication administration best practices that will prevent providers from making dangerous errors. For Cebollero, the fact that the suspect came forward and admitted her mistake, yet was still charged, means that fewer providers will “admit their drug errors” in the future. Grayson counters by pointing out the number of safeguards that would need to break down in order for a drug error of that magnitude to occur.
Above all, “this is a case EMS needs to watch closely, as it may have a big impact on those that administer medications in EMS,” Cebollero said.
