INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The latest technology in the fight against Ebola and other infectious diseases includes specially-equipped ambulances.
“Medic Zero” is one of two dedicated units specially equipped to transport patients with any type of infectious disease.
It is completely lined with a moisture-proof barrier so no bodily fluids can get out. And it can only be opened from the outside, so patients can’t get out and spread an illness.
Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services will be able to transport patients in ‘Medic Zero’ statewide, said Operations Chief Carl Rochelle.
“Once we suspect a case of Ebola, and there’s no test for it in the field, we activate ‘Medic Zero’ with a team of 50 medics who have specialized training,” Rochelle said.
The process of decontamination takes about 45 minutes. After that, the ambulance can then be completely refitted and ready to go back out in about an hour or two.
