Twelve people — seven children and five adults — were inside the SUV at the time of the crash.

The California Highway Patrol, per the report, cited 10 people needed medical attention.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

The Los Angeles Fire Department told KTLA that all 12 were taken to local hospitals, including one person in serious condition. The other 11 occupants of the car were said to have sustained minor injuries and were listed as being in fair condition.

KTLA reports debris, including a stroller and children’s toys, could be seen on the freeway as ambulances, fire trucks and law enforcement vehicles arrived at the scene.

According multiple reports, authorities said drug and alcohol were not believed to be a factor in the crash, but it was still unclear whether each passenger in the SUV was wearing a seat belt.
