PORTLAND HARBOR, Maine — Firefighters and Good Samaritans helped save an 84-year-old woman who drove her car off a harbor and nearly drowned.
The woman somehow lost control of her car Friday afternoon and went careening off Portland Harbor into the water, according to the Portland Daily Sun.
Onlookers nearby and police officers and firefighters jumped into the bay to rescue the woman.
Shortly after the accident occurred, a local fire department was training close by and was able to respond within 30 seconds, diving in and pulling the driver out of the fast sinking car.
The rescuers were able to get the woman out of the rear window of the car before it almost completely sank.
The woman reported bruises and was taken to the hospital. She said that she felt the accelerator of the vehicle get stuck.
No one else was injured in the accident.
