Ill. ambulance dies, leaves patient waiting

Franklin park ambulances taking a beating; many ambulances out of service

FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. — Franklin Park has three ambulances, but two were broken this week when a woman needed help. And when the third ambulance got there, it too broke down.

“It died out as we got there,” said firefighter and Village Clerk Tommy Thomson.

Paramedics had been called Sunday to the home where a female resident was feeling weak and wanted to go to a hospital. They were willing to take her. But their ambulance was not.

So neighboring River Grove’s paramedics had to. They arrived within four to six minutes, and the woman suffered no serious consequences from the delay, Thomson said.

“She was stable,” Thomson said. “She wasn’t going to get any worse.”

Acting Fire Chief Steve Iovinelli said he recently requested village trustees buy a new ambulance. One is decommissioned and no longer in service, while the other is unusable, awaiting a parts delivery, he said.
