Medics drive mental health patients hundreds of miles for care

Psychiatric patient transfers take ambulance crews out of the communities they are supposed to serve for hours at a time

VIRGINIA, Minn. — When you see lights and hear sirens from an ambulance, you immediately think someone needs medical help.

“Depending on the day, we do an average of 9-10 runs,” Mike Ruedebusch told us. He’s the Emergency Medical Services Coordinator for the Virginia Fire Department.

But not all calls are for heart attacks or strokes or car crashes. For example, Virginia paramedics spent countless hours and miles on mental health transfers, bringing a patient from an emergency room to a hospital that can help him or her.
