ASHBURN, Ga. — An EMS station is in danger of being permanently shut down after proposed budget cuts.
Ashburn city leaders are fighting against the budget proposed by county commissioners that would force EMS staff cuts and shut down EMS Station 2, according to WALB.
“I think EMS is probably one of the most vital departments right now by the county lacking a hospital,” city manager Sedric Carithers said.
Some residents think the station is necessary because the city is divided by train tracks. They are concerned a passing train could slow down response time in an emergency.
“Time is very crucial, especially when someone is having a heart attack or stroke. So the faster you can get there, the faster you can save a life,” resident Jerry Lewis said.
EMS director Robby Royal does not believe the city will be harmed with the closing of the station.
The budget will be voted on in July.
