AGUDA, Portugal — A Portuguese fire chief was killed in a highway crash earlier this week.

Aguda Fire Department Fire Chief Fernando Reis, 49, was killed in the line of duty while transporting a patient to the hospital when his ambulance crashed Monday, according to local news reports.

A fellow firefighter, Diogo Matos, 22, is now in intensive care.

The patient being transported at the time of the accident survived, but it is unknown what condition she is in.

Chief Reis was a 20-year veteran firefighter.
