WASHINGTON — A patient unexpectedly jumped out of an ambulance into oncoming traffic last Thursday, before running off into the woods.

Officials said the man was being transported from one hospital to another when he jumped out.

NBC Washington reported the incident was captured by a commuter driving several cars behind the ambulance, and shows the man tumbling out of the vehicle, stumbling towards the shoulder of the highway and jumping over the barrier. He then ran away into nearby woods.

The ambulance stopped, and a first responder attempted to retrieve the patient. Authorities didn’t find the man until the next day. He had minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.

“He was very lucky he wasn’t seriously injured or even killed. Dangerous — very dangerous,” Maryland State Police Lt. Dan Pickett said.
