HALIFAX, Mass. — Authorities say the pilot of an ultralight helicopter that crashed in a wooded area of Halifax has been hospitalized with serious injuries.
Officials say the man from Scituate in his 50s suffered burns over 30 percent of his body and broken bones when the aircraft went down about a mile from its takeoff point at Cranland Airport in Hanson at about 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the trees. Emergency personnel had to make their way to the crash site on all-terrain vehicles, and it took 90 minutes to get the pilot to an ambulance. The victim, whose name was not released, was flown to a Boston hospital.
Authorities say the pilot was conscious and talking when rescue personnel reached him.
Federal aviation authorities are investigating.
