GRANT COUNY, Wis. — A Dickeyville man shot himself with a crossbow on Monday, then crashed his vehicle driving himself to a hospital, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office reported.

At about 6:10 a.m., a 911 caller reported a crash at 6742 Highway 35 /81, just west of Lancaster in the town of South Lancaster. The caller said a vehicle had left the highway and was in their tree-line about a quarter-mile off the road, near their house, Sheriff Craig Reukauf said in a statement Thursday.

While emergency responders were heading to the scene, the caller also reported that the person who crashed had been driving himself to Grant Regional Health Center in his 2018 Chevrolet Colorado when he passed out after having been struck in the ankle with an arrow.

Deputies learned that Gary Corbett, 73, of Dickeyville, had been preparing to hunt on property near the end of Millstream Lanes, just outside of Cassville, when the crossbow he was using fired.

Corbett was taken by ambulance to Grant Regional Heath Center for treatment of his injuries and later transferred to a larger medical facility for advanced care.

This incident was also referred to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources due to the hunting related incident.
