MITCHELL, Neb. — A 4-year-old boy is recovering in a Denver hospital after his foot was severed Sunday in a lawn mowing accident in western Nebraska.

Shortly after noon on Sunday, the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a 4-year-old boy’s foot had been severed in a lawn mower accident at a rural residence near Mitchell, Nebraska. Deputies, the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department and Regional West Ambulance responded to the scene, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.

A nearby off-duty medical professional rendered aid immediately. The boy went by an AirLink plane to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff and then flown to a Denver hospital for further treatment.

“The investigation indicates that this was an accidental event, and we anticipate no criminal charges,” the statement said. “Because there are no charges indicated, we are not naming any of the parties involved.”

According to a 2024 study by the University of Iowa’s Public Health Department, 10,000 children are injured by lawn mowers every year. These injuries are the number one cause of major limb loss under 10 years of age in the U.S.
