As Indian Land awaits a new MUSC Health hospital, York County-based Piedmont Medical Center is positioned to beat its healthcare neighbor in the race to open the area’s first new large healthcare facility.

Piedmont intends to open a 10,000-square-foot freestanding emergency department in Indian Land next spring, the company announced Wednesday. It’ll be off U.S. 521, or Charlotte Highway, between Stone Commons Lane and Parkstone Drive in the Parkstone at Indian Land development.

MUSC Health and Piedmont have largely stayed on their own sides of the York and Lancaster county line until now.

MUSC Health is a statewide public healthcare system with hospitals in Lancaster and Chester. Piedmont is a private hospital system. Indian Land is one of the fastest-growing areas in the Carolinas, a strip of Lancaster County that borders York County along with Mecklenburg and Union counties in North Carolina.

The long-anticipated MUSC Health hospital won’t open in Indian Land until early 2028, the company’s Catawba Division CEO Scott Broome told The Herald last month. It’s part of a $300 million plan on Charlotte Highway that also includes a multi-story medical office building.

“I am honored to be the first hospital system to provide access to emergency care in Indian Land,” Piedmont Medical Center Market CEO Teresa Urquhart said in Wednesday’s announcement. Piedmont declined to say how much the project will cost until closer to opening.

Piedmont runs hospitals in Rock Hill and Fort Mill. Along with doctor offices and specialty centers, Piedmont also has a freestanding emergency department off Gold Hill Road in Fort Mill.

The new Indian Land site will be an extension of the two main hospitals in York County, according to the company. About the new Indian Land emergency department

The first emergency department in Indian Land will be open around the clock, with 12 exam rooms, trauma rooms and a triage area. It’ll have an ambulance bay, CT scan, X-ray, ultrasound and on-site lab work.

The original Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill has 282 beds. The Fort Mill hospital that opened three years ago has another 100 beds.

While Piedmont operates the only hospitals in York County, MUSC Health owns the hospitals in Lancaster and Chester counties.

The Indian Land hospital, planned for a more than 80-acre site south of Marvin Road, will be the third one to go with hospitals in the cities of Lancaster and Chester.

The announcement of a Piedmont emergency department doesn’t change plans for MUSC Health.

“We know residents deserve convenient access to advanced care, and our $300-million project is designed to deliver just that,” Broome said in a statement. “We welcome the opportunity to meet the increased demand for health care in this region and are proud that Indian Land residents will no longer need to travel far for the care they need.”
