DES MOINES, Iowa — There’s a debate in Des Moines over how ambulance services should be funded. Currently, Iowa does not consider emergency medical services an essential service. Meaning rural ambulance providers are often privately funded with donations, instead of tax dollars.

The Preston ambulance service says taxes could help get its emergency responders on scene faster. “When I see the people on the street I thank them,” says Preston insurance agent Michael Bormann. He rates the Preston ambulance service top notch because he took a ride with them in September. It happened after a cookout turned ugly.

“Decided to go up the deck steps and had a tumble off the steps and broke my leg, and broke my arm, and broke my nose, and cut my face up a little bit,” says Bormann.
