Rising diesel costs push Ky. EMS to adjust budget

Georgetown Scott County EMS officials say fuel prices have jumped in recent weeks, prompting the agency to increase its annual fuel budget while maintaining full emergency response capabilities

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Georgetown Scott County EMS is preparing to adjust its fuel budget as diesel prices continue to rise, though officials said the higher costs will not affect emergency response.

The department operates 11 trucks with diesel tanks ranging from 32 to 75 gallons, and Chief Christopher Runyon said diesel prices have climbed 80 cents over the past month, WKYT reported.

The department is working on its budget for the next fiscal year, and Runyon said the agency will likely need to increase its usual annual fuel allocation of about $150,000.

Runyon said ambulances are filled at least twice a day to keep fuel levels above three-fourths of a tank, though the number of daily runs can affect how often crews need to refuel.

He said the 80 cent increase may seem small, but the cost quickly adds up across 11 trucks operating around the clock.

To handle rising fuel costs, should EMS agencies adjust their budgets or look for other ways to offset the increase?
