Hero of the Week: Off-duty EMS pulls man from burning car

EMT Ben Foley saw a collision on the way to a Christmas party, and stopped to help a semi-conscious driver as the vehicle filled with smoke

We all know there’s no such thing as truly being ‘off-duty’ for dedicated EMS professionals, and this Boston area EMT on his way to a Christmas party is a great demonstration of that.

Cataldo EMT Ben Foley pulled over when he saw that a black Jetta had rear-ended a Ford Expedition on the Neponset Bridge, and as he got closer he noticed the Jetta was on fire.

The driver was drifting in and out of consciousness and as the car filled with smoke, he and the driver of the Ford pulled the man out and moved him away from the car in case it were to explode.

Like a true hero, Foley was of course modest about the save and said he was happy he was there.

“I don’t think I saved his life, probably,” he said. “I don’t know.”
