EMS supervisor first at fire scene, hailed as hero

The Jersey City Medical Center medic found a fire before it was reported and rushed to save those in the house

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Veteran medic and EMS supervisor Ralph Bravo is being hailed as hero after being first to respond to a fire and saving two people.

The medic from Jersey City Medical Center was on patrol when he saw smoke coming from an area nearby, The Jersey Journal reported.

He stopped what he was doing and searched for the source of the smoke.

“I called my dispatcher, and they said no fire had been reported. I finally found the house, and I could see there was a lot of smoke coming out,” he said.

Bravo rushed inside the house and found two people sleeping on the second floor.

“I updated the dispatcher and ran into the two-family house and got two people out,” he said.

Firefighters were there a few minutes later. When they arrived, there were heavy flames and smoke extending from the attick.

“That’s why I love this job,” Bravo said. “You never know what’s going to happen. Every day is different.”

“These types of incidents speak volumes about the caliber of individuals we have here at the Jersey City Medical Center EMS,” said Rob Luckritz, EMS director at JCMC. “We are so proud of chief Bravo for going above and beyond this morning.”
