PHOENIX — The family of a mentally ill man, who was punched by firefighters, has filed an $11 million claim against the City of Glendale and its Fire Department.
“Every day he’s getting worse and worse and worse,” Margarita Murillo said of her 30-year-old son, James, who was injured in an incident with firefighters on October 26, 2014.
The family called 911, after finding James having a seizure on the floor. He suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, something his mother told the crew which arrived to help. After firefighters put James on a gurney to bring him to the hospital, he became “confused, agitated, and began swinging his arms,” according to the claim. As he struggled to get off the gurney, one hand hit a firefighter’s face.
