LAWRENCE COUNTY, Miss. — Paramedics helped a woman deliver her fifth baby in the back of an ambulance as they were on the way to the hospital.

WAPT 16 reported that baby Maddox was born early in the morning in the back of an ambulance as paramedics was transporting the mother, Katie Daley, to the hospital.

“I wasn’t nervous. I knew my abilities. I knew what was coming and I knew I was in good hands and that they were going to do their part,” she said.

For her husband, Justin, who was not there at the time of the birth, it was unexpected.

“That was the shock factor. When you get a phone call saying, ‘Hey, congratulations. We just had your child on the side of Highway 84 in the back of an ambulance,” he said.

Paramedic Gregory Stalans of Rapid Rural Response Paramedics said they are not typically equipped to treat babies.

“We don’t treat babies all the time, so if something were to go wrong, we have the training, the knowledge and the access to treat that patient if something is wrong with them, but it’s not available in your mind all of the time,” he said.

Maddox was born weighing 9 pounds, 6 ounces and was 20 inches long.
