BRIGHTON, England — A BMW driver deliberately blocked an ambulance transporting a patient to the hospital and then angrily refused to move his car.
The incident was captured by a bystander and posted on Facebook. The video went viral and shocked viewers reacted in disgust.
The South East Ambulance Service vehicle and the car were traveling in opposite ways under a railway bridge, where the lanes merged into one. The BMW driver refused to reverse and wouldn’t let the ambulance pass.
“You are obstructing a patient going to hospital,” a paramedic said.
“No, I’m not,” the driver replied.
The BMW driver, Neil Waugh, claimed to have been the subject of a hate campaign since the video went public, the Evening Standard reported.
“I have been portrayed as the kind of person who would rather let someone die in an ambulance than move my car and that’s not the case,” he said.
“In hindsight maybe I should have just reversed,” he added.
Waugh said he filed a formal complaint against the paramedics.
