A private ambulance caught fire today while taking a patient to a hospital, officials said.

The crew and the patient made it out of the vehicle without harm, and another ambulance transported the patient, police said. The ambulance crew declined to discuss the patient’s ailment or condition.

Flames engulfed the front of the Euta Medical Ambulance Services van about 10:45 a.m. on northbound Texas 288 near the Yellowstone exit.

Northbound traffic along the freeway came to a crawl for about an hour while Houston firefighters extinguished the flames.

Police at the scene said an electrical problem in the van apparently caused the fire.
