GONZALES, La. — The Gonzales Fire Department has been honored by an international association for its City Assisting People Program.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs presented the department with a Certificate of Commendation in its 2007 Award of Excellence Program.

Paramedics with the Gonzales Fire Department provide in-home welfare and safety checks to retired people and residents in need of special assistance.

In addition, people taking part in the program are provided with an emergency alert device that allows them to call for help in the event they are incapacitated.

More than 50 residents take part in the free program.

“We have always strived to improve the quality of life in our city, this program does just that and protects the people who made us the adults we are today,” Mayor Johnny Berthelot said.

Fire Chief Butch Browning thanked the mayor and City Council for their support of public safety program like City Assisting People.

The service was started with a donation from Tanger Factory Outlet Center.
