JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. — A Jefferson County school bus crashed in a ravine on Friday morning.
The bus was an Exceptional Education bus with five people on board, including the driver an aide and three students. The students on the bus attend Minor High School and Minor Middle School.
The accident happened at 2941 Mulga Loop Road at 7:18 a.m. Details of what led to the wreck remain under investigation, but the bus ended up almost on its side.
Birmingham and Adamsville police and firefighters and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies are among those who responded to the scene.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Battalion Chief Clay Hendon said the crash involved the bus and a pickup truck.
First responders evaluated six patients, with four being transported to the hospital. Hendon said those transported were two adults and two children. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
The pickup truck driver had to be freed from their vehicle and suffered the most serious injuries. The driver is expected to be OK.
One student in a wheelchair was initially reported trapped on the bus. Hendon said the child wasn’t actually trapped but needed assistance off the bus because of the disability.
The rest of the students were able to get out of the bus through the back doors. A second bus was brought to the scene to transport the uninjured to school.
Jefferson County Schools spokesman John Huddleston said a school employee was among those hurt and sustained minor injuries.
