FORT WORTH, Texas — A MedStar ambulance crew cared for more than the sick Thursday night when they stopped what appeared to be a fight in the middle of Interstate 30, a company spokesman said.
MedStar ambulance Unit 53 was traveling east on I-30 at Oakland Boulevard when a paramedic and an EMT saw a vehicle stopped in a traffic lane with what appeared to be a man and woman fighting outside it, said Medstar spokesman Matt Zavadsky.
The crew parked a little distance behind the vehicle and parked in a way to act as a shield from oncoming traffic, Zavadsky said. And the ambulance’s flashing lights were turned on as a warning to drivers, he said.
The male paramedic got out of the ambulance and saw “a man and woman in a physical altercation,” Zavadsky said.
The man turned toward the paramedic and a “brief physical scuffle on the highway ensued,” Zavadsky said.
A passerby pulled over and helped the paramedic calm the man down until police arrived.
Fort Worth police said the argument was between a boyfriend and girlfriend. The girlfriend had gotten out of the vehicle and started walking down the shoulder of the highway when the boyfriend tried to get her back in, said Sgt. Steve Enright, a Fort Worth police spokesman.
Enright said no assault occurred and no arrests were made.
The EMT, a woman, stayed in the ambulance, Zavadsky said.
In addition to thanking the Fort Worth police and fire departments, MedStar would like to find the man who stopped to help to thank him, Zavadsky said.
