SAN JOSE, Calif. — A man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a paramedic then broke out of an ambulance and ran off in broad daylight Monday, authorities said.
San Jose police officers were called about 11:24 a.m. to West Hedding Street and Coleman Avenue after the escape involving a man being transported to the emergency psychiatric services at Valley Medical Center, Sgt. Enrique Garcia said.
Garcia said the man apparently freed himself from his gurney while inside the transport and assaulted the paramedic tending to him. When the ambulance driver stopped the vehicle in response to the commotion, the man fled from the back of the ambulance.
The man made his way about a mile southwest to The Alameda and West Taylor Street, where officers caught up to him and arrested him, Garcia said.
The man’s identity was not immediately released, but Garcia said he was expected to be booked on suspicion of assault.
