NEW YORK — An emergency medical technician for the FDNY, who previously worked as a volunteer firefighter in Hempstead, was accused Sunday of sexually assaulting a minor, police said.
Frantz Petion, 25, was arrested at 3:19 a.m. in Queens and charged with rape, strangulation and an act in a manner injurious to a child, according to the NYPD.
The alleged victim was a 10-year-old girl who was described as a “friend of the family,” a police source said.
Petion will be suspended without pay for the maximum 30 days as police investigate, said FDNY spokesman James Long, who said Petion had worked for the department for two years.
An attorney for Petion could not be reached for comment Sunday night.
Petion worked for about a year as a volunteer firefighter for the Hempstead Fire Department before taking the job with the FDNY, said Hempstead Chief Frederick V. Sandas Jr., who said he was shocked to hear the allegations against Petion.
“He was a quiet kid,” Sandas said Sunday night. “He got a job opportunity and I said, ‘Go ahead, do what you gotta do. That’s gonna bring you money, a volunteer’s not.’”
Sandas said he wasn’t aware of any disciplinary issues or complaints filed by the public against Petion.
“He was good,” said Sandas. “He did what he was supposed to.”
It was unclear when Petion would be arraigned.
