Texas man dies after jumping out of ambulance

The man was inside the ambulance when he unbuckled himself from a gurney and jumped from the moving vehicle onto the freeway

EL PASO, Texas An El Paso man died Monday morning after jumping out of an ambulance on Interstate 10 near Bassett Place, police said.

Police officials identified the man who died as Abner Lozano, 24, who was under an emergency detention order. Lozano was being transported by Life Ambulance from a medical facility to University Behavioral Health Center.

The incident occurred at 8:30 a.m. on I-10 West on the Geronimo Drive overpass, police said. Lozano was inside the ambulance when he unbuckled himself from a gurney and then jumped from the moving vehicle onto the freeway.

Lozano was taken to University Medical Center of El Paso, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The investigation closed a portion of I-10 West and backed up traffic in the area during the morning commute.
