Transgender patient attacks medic, gets no jail time

Ambulance services are disappointed with the sentence, believing an assault on EMS crews warrants a greater penalty

MANCHESTER, England — A U.K. medic was attacked while transporting an emotionally distressed transgender patient.

Philip Ogden was in the back of the ambulance with Kevin Fletcher, 36, now known as Leyla, when she hurled a shampoo bottle at his head and began kicking him, According to the Mirror UK.

Medics had responded to reports of a woman having a seizure in downtown Manchester. Fletcher was found sprawled on the ground, but not seizing. Medics put her in a wheelchair and loaded her into the ambulance where the attack occurred.

The court has given Fletcher a lighter sentence due to “personal difficulties” relating her failed gender-reassignment surgery. Fletcher was given a conditional discharge with no jail time.

Ambulance services are “extremely disappointed” with the lack of accountability of the sentence.

Director of Emergency Service for North West Ambulance Service Derek Cartwright told the Mirror, “Our message is that we will always push for those who assault crews to receive the maximum sentence allowed.”

Fletcher has been order to pay compensation to the assaulted medic.
