Motorcyclist killed in collision with NY ambulance

The biker was pinned under the tire of the ambulance and died on arrival at a local hospital

NEW YORK — A motorcyclist was killed Friday after colliding with an ambulance on the way to a medical emergency in East Harlem.

The New York Presbyterian ambulance had lights and sirens activated when it hit a 44-year-old man on a silver Yamaha motorcycle around 9:40 a.m. Friday on Lexington Avenue, the New York Post reports.

Bystanders say the biker was thrown and wedged beneath the tire of the ambulance. A second ambulance rushed him to Metropolitan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Witness John Doherty, 23, said the motorcyclist gunned it just before the crash, New York Daily News reports.

“He was moving very fast,” he said. “I’m guessing he thought he could catch the light.”

The biker’s name is being withhold pending family notification, and the incident is under investigation.
