FAIRPORT, N.Y. — An Upstate New York paramedic was injured by violence while providing care, according to multiple reports.

Perinton Ambulance told the Democrat & Chronicle that an EMS provider was assaulted at 2 a.m. Saturday during a medical call in the Village of Fairport. Officials said a patient attacked the paramedic, who was treated for injuries and is now recovering.

No additional details about the Perinton employee or the patient were released.

WHEC reports Perinton Ambulance is an emergency medical services provider for Perinton, Fairport and the surrounding areas. A video circulating on social media appears to show a group of people fighting Saturday morning outside businesses in Fairport, but it’s unclear if the incident is related to the assault on the paramedic.

“This is a difficult day for our organization,” said Robert Cieri, director of operations for Perinton Ambulance, in a statement. “Our crews come to work to help people on their worst days. Violence toward EMS professionals is unacceptable.”

Cieri said the agency intends to press charges. Perinton’s 24/7 operations have not been affected, he added.

An investigation is ongoing.

Fairport and Perinton are both located in Monroe County, less than 15 miles outside of Rochester.
