HOLLAND, Mich. — Giselle Torres, a student in an EMS class at the Careerline Tech Center, recently responded to a choking child who could not breathe.

Giselle, who is CPR certified, heard cries for help at the Holland High softball team’s Custom Car & Bike Show, according to the school district. She and teammate Jaelynn Ybarra-Brandon, who is also CPR certified, jumped into action.

“I started doing what we learned, which is five firm pats on the back and then you flip the child over; five compressions to the chest. And you do that until you know the object is dislodged.”

Jaelynn told the child what to do while Giselle continued to help him breathe until police and EMS providers arrived.
