FAIRBORN, Ohio — An infant whose scalp was ripped off during a fight between his parents was discharged from Children’s Medical Center of Dayton on Monday, according to a hospital spokesperson.
The medical center performed surgery on the 1-month-old boy, following the June 5 incident.
The newborn’s father Kodi Weatherspoon told Fairborn Police that he was attempting to grab his wife’s hair when he grabbed his son’s head instead, according to Sgt. Paul Hicks.
Weatherspoon, 34, was being held in the Greene County Jail Tuesday afternoon, Hicks said. He was arraigned in Fairborn Municipal Court on two counts of felonious assault and one count of child endangering.
His bond was set at $20,000. The case is expected to go to grand jury for consideration.
The incident happened while the couple was at their Duncan Drive apartment.
The mother told police when he went to pull her hair, he accidentally pulled the baby’s hair, ripping off his scalp.
Weatherspoon made the call for help and can be heard on the 911 call saying “I’m sorry.”
When officers arrived, the mother was found with a facial laceration and was bleeding. She was holding the child, and officers could see his scalp was missing.
“The injury provided me with the observation of what appeared to be bone to the head,” the reporting officer wrote in the police report.
Blood spots were observed throughout the apartment. A medic had to retrieve the scalp from the kitchen floor, pack it into ice and transport it to the hospital, according to a police report.
Weatherspoon admitted to police he had assaulted the woman, according to the report. She was taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment.
