A portion of The Gardens Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation center was evacuated on the city’s west side Tuesday morning after a hazmat incident, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

Around 9:20 a.m. fire crews called for hazmat technicians’ help at 104 Lois Lane. It’s suspected that cleaning chemicals were improperly mixed and the vapor from the chemicals spread to the air vents, the Fire Department said on X.

Twenty-three residents of the assisted-care facility were evacuated, according to Spencer Cozzens with The Gardens’ operational resources department. Cozzens said the facility houses 43 residents. At about 10 a.m. hazmat technicians and fire crews said the building was safe and let all the residents back inside.

Two Gardens residents were hospitalized with “minor respiratory” illness, the Fire Department said. A third person was treated on scene.

Roads were closed in the area near West Pikes Peak Avenue and the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort during the evacuation.
