CLIFTON, N.J. — A 55-year-old City resident was charged this week with operating a lucrative ambulance company for sick, elderly and wheelchair-ridden individuals that received millions in Medicare and Medicaid funds despite him being barred from doing so due to a previous health care fraud conviction.

Imadeldin Awad Khair was indicted by a federal grand jury in Newark on Monday with one count of health care fraud, one count of obstruction of a federal audit, 11 counts of tax evasion and four counts of money laundering, according to U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman.

Because Khair pleaded guilty in 2003 to healthcare fraud, he was prohibited from participating in Medicare, Medicaid or other federal health care programs for a minimum of 11 years. Despite the ruling, Khair served as the de facto owner and operator K & S Invalid Coach, a licensed ambulance and wheelchair transportation service located at 490 Getty Ave., since 2005, according to court documents.
