LOWER MAKEFIELD, Pa. — The first time she noticed the pea-sized lump near the right side of her rib cage was in October 2004. “It’s either Fox Chase or Sloan Kettering,” the doctor told Diane Siano, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. The Lower Makefield police officer chose Fox Chase.

She wasn’t alone in her fight. In 2012, about 226,870 new cases of breast cancer in women are expected. Of that number, 39,510 will die, according to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure. Men get breast cancer, too. In 2012, 2,190 new cases are expected, with 410 of the men predicted to die.

To raise awareness about the disease, the Yardley-Makefield Emergency Unit held an event to debut its new “pink” ambulance, said squad administrative assistant Ellyn Fisher.
