LONDON — A victim of London’s 7/7 bombings that killed 52 was chosen to carry the torch for the 2012 London Olympic Games, but as the date drew closer, doctors advised her not to go through with the task due to those injuries.
Instead, Gill Hicks asked Tracey Russell, one of the first medics to treat Hicks when she lost both her legs in the bombing, to carry the torch for her, according to Sky News.
Russell said that Hicks’ request came out of the blue.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to do it for her and very honoured that she has asked me,” Russell said. “I just want to make Gill proud.”
“I will be watching her online with incredible pride,” Hicks said.
