MUSKOGEE, Okla. — First responders in Muskogee are looking to fill their vehicles Friday with back-to-school supplies, using the public’s help.
Muskogee Police Department, Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service and the Muskogee Fire Department will set up camp Friday at the civic center to collect school supplies that can then be distributed to school children, said police spokesman Lincoln Anderson.
“It’s not an agency competition at all,” Anderson said. “We’re doing this as a big team.”
The three agencies will park an ambulance, a firetruck, and the police department’s Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle at the civic center, where residents are encouraged to donate any school supplies they can.
“Every school, every grade is different in what they need, in what they want students to bring,” Anderson said.
Crayons, highlighters, rulers, paper, pens and pencils are only a few items among those need by students. After the collection, Anderson said he will organize a place to distribute the supplies.
Parents can come into the distribution point, which has yet to be decided, to pick up what they need.
“We’ll go down the list,” Anderson said. “And whatever supplies we have for that child for that grade for the school we’ll give them.”
Donations of items from outside the lists is encouraged, Anderson said. He suggested new socks, underwear, shoes and gift certificates for haircuts.
