HIGH POINT, N.C. — Several Southwest Guilford Middle School students were treated by Guilford County EMS Thursday afternoon after someone sprayed an unknown irritant in the school.

Assistant Fire Chief Mike Levins said firefighters and EMS responded at about 2:15 p.m. after getting a call about something being sprayed in the hallways of the school and causing irritation.

He said the students had scratchy throats from the spray. It’s unknown what the irritant was that was sprayed. EMS treated 37 students on scene.

“None of them had to be transported to the hospital and no one suffered any injuries,” he said. “Basically, the treatment was time and waiting for it to wear off.”

Levins said Thursday afternoon firefighters were monitoring the air in the school.

Nora Murray, Guilford County Schools spokeswoman, said there is an ongoing investigation into what was sprayed and who sprayed it. She said school is set to resume as normal on Friday.
