ATV riders surround, stop ambulance transporting sick kid

An ATV rider opened the door to an ambulance and accused the EMS providers of cutting them off; crews were transporting a child to the NICU with lights and sirens on

WASHINGTON — As many as 30 ATV riders surrounded and stopped a commerical ambulance transporting a sick child Monday.

NBC Washington reported the incident comes after many others involving ATVs and dirt bikes in the D.C. area. Local and federal agencies have teamed up to stop the riders, who are on the streets illegally.

An alert was sent out to fire departments on Monday after the attack on the ambulance. The ambulance was transporting a child to the NICU at Children’s National Medical Center.

During the attack, one of the ATV riders opened the door to an ambulance and accused an EMS provider of cutting him off. The EMS providers were able to close and lock their door, but the riders reportedly refused to allow the ambulance to move. When police arrived, the ATVs dispersed and allowed the ambulance to continue.

In a separate incident over the weekend, a D.C. police officer was hit by a group of ATVs. The officer was struck and dragged down a street, according to the report.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier said there’s a regional effort involving state, local and federal law enforcement agencies to stop the illegal riders.
