NY bill would grant 9/11 responders unlimited sick leave

Sen. Terrence Murphy said the bill is meant to help responders who were sickened by their efforts at Ground Zero get the help they need

NEW YORK — A New York state bill would give 9/11 first responders unlimited sick leave.

News12 reported that the bill would extend the unlimited sick leave to all 9/11 responders who live in the state of New York instead of just those who live in New York City.

The bill is meant to give responders the chance to get as much treatment as they need, and 9/11 first responder Barry McGoey said many responders need it.

“Many first responders from the surrounding community and all of the state of New York, they’re becoming ill many years later and are forced to use their own sick leave,” McGoey said.

State Sen. Terrence Murphy, who co-sponsored the bill, said state utility workers who helped at Ground Zero would also be given unlimited sick leave.

“This is just the right thing to do for people that came to protect us in a time of need,” he said.

Last year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that gave 9/11 responders in New York City unlimited sick leave.
