ST. PAUL, Minn. — An EMS agency is looking to determine the confidence level of EMS providers around the country in the care of transgender patients.
HealthEast Medical Transportation launched a national survey for EMS providers to gauge industry confidence in caring for transgender patients. Results from the survey will be used to create an EMS-specific curriculum on transgender patient care.
“EMS cares for patients from every walk of life, social status and station,” HealthEast Medical Transportation Medical Director Keith Wesley said. “Transgender patients have unique needs both personally and professionally, but to date, little has been done to educate EMS providers in those needs. This creates the potential for transgender patients to avoid seeking care and EMS providers feeling unsure in how to approach and care for them.”
The survey is anonymous and voluntary, and can be accessed here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/emscareoftransgenderpatients
“Only through understanding and professionalism can EMS provide the best care, not only to transgender, but all patients,” Wesley said.
