WASHINGTON — A bill meant to authorize the building of a national EMS memorial was passed by the U.S. Senate Wednesday.
The bill, S. 1692, was introduced by Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), according to a Facebook post by the National EMS Memorial Foundation.
The bill will allow a commemorative memorial honoring EMS providers to be built on federal land in Washington, D.C.
“The National EMS Memorial Foundation extends its greatest gratitude to the entire Senate for taking this historic step toward honoring the commitment, service and sacrifice of the Nation’s EMS providers,” the Facebook post read.
Sen. Coons, who previously worked as a New Castle County (Del.) executive, said his job was to make sure EMS personnel were well-trained and responsive professionals.
“First responders’ steadfast commitment to others, at a moment’s notice and despite risk, exemplifies the finest traditions of the American spirit,” he wrote on Facebook. “Thus, I am proud to work with fellow Democrats and Republicans to ensure that EMS personnel receive the honor and acknowledgement they deserve.”
