PALMDALE, Calif. — A man was extracted from a concrete well in the town of Palmdale about 50 miles north of Los Angeles on Saturday night after spending nearly 24 hours trapped inside.

Firefighters and rescue crews were forced to use jackhammers to widen the opening of the narrow irrigation sump measuring six to eight feet in depth before they were able to pull the man to safety.

Once above ground, the unidentified 45-year-old victim appeared to be shaken, dehydrated and in pain. He was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated, according to a county fire dispatcher, ABC7 reported.
