HANOVER COUNTY, Va. — Fire department officials gave an update on the status of two firefighters who were hurt in a crash that killed one of their colleagues.
WTVR reported that Hanover County Fire and EMS rookie firefighter Carter Lewis, who lost his leg when a tractor-trailer crashed into the crew’s fire truck, has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, according to officials.

Officials said the day of the crash was Carter’s first day on the job.
The second injured firefighter, identified as David, has continued to progress after several surgeries, and is still listed in stable, but serious condition.
Lt. Brad Clark was killed in the crash that occurred during heavy winds and rain brought by Tropical Storm Michael.
