Texas infant falls into bucket, drowns

The 1-year-old boy was pulled out and given CPR, but he wasn’t responsive

RIVER OAKS, Texas — A 1-year-old boy who died Wednesday in an apparent drowning incident at his home has been identified as Miguel Tovar, the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office reported Thursday on its website.

Miguel was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, the medical examiner’s office reported.

MedStar officials said they were called at 7:30 p.m. to a house in the 600 block of Hassett Avenue in River Oaks.

The infant had been in one room playing with family members when he walked away to another room, said Deputy Chief Christopher Spieldenner on Thursday.

“He had been away from the the family just a short time,” Spieldenner said. “He fell head first into what I would call a mop bucket and couldn’t get out.”

The infant was pulled out, but he wasn’t responsive, the deputy chief said.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was being given when the ambulance crew arrived, said Matt Zavadsky, a MedStar spokesman.

CPR was continued in the ambulance, which took the child to the Fort Worth hospital, Zavadsky said.

Officials with Child Protective Services are investigating the case, said CPS spokeswoman Marissa Gonzales on Thursday.

“Two brothers, 5 and 7 years-old, are staying with relatives while the investigation is conducted,” Gonzales said. “The family has no history of contact with CPS.”
