POINT PLEASANT BOROUGH, N.J. — Deep in territory ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, Gov. Chris Christie today picked up the endorsement of a statewide coalition of volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians.
The newly created Volunteer Emergency Services for Christie coalition, led by a bipartisan team of leaders and coordinators in all 21 counties, includes officers and rank-and-file members of emergency services groups across the state, according to Christie’s reelection campaign.
During a 14-minute speech outside the Point Pleasant Borough Volunteer Fire Co. No. 2, Christie emphasized the need for these local volunteers and highlighted what he called a legislative attack two years in a row on emergency services. He did not identify the political party (Democrat) or the lead sponsor of the bill (Assemblyman Herb Conaway of Burlington County) he vetoed in 2012 and again in May that would have set training standards for all first responders and regulate how emergency medical services are provided in this state.
